HEBREWS STUDY
January - July 2025
Dr. Newton begins the new 2025 year with 2 parts of prep-introduction to this incredible treatise to the nation of Israel. In the first half of this teaching he examines Saul's/Paul's resume as a self-described "Hebrew among Hebrews" - a very "Strict" Pharisee with the formal education and background to pen this high-level academic epistle. In the second half of this opening teaching, Dr. Newton reviews 12 strong evidences that Paul is clearly the author of this letter - which all directly refute the claims of various theologians and seminarians who deny that Paul wrote this inspired epistle.
Dr. Newton opens his apologetic to his beloved Hebrew nation by examining the first 4 of his 40 citations from the Torah, Psalms, and prophets as he takes up his first position: that Jesus from Nazareth is superior to angels. This is the first of Paul's positions, as he will also demonstrate that Jesus is higher [more important] than: 2] Moses and 3] the Hebrews' priestly system of Levites and the Temple sacrifices and rituals. These are the three most important facets that matter to a Jewish believer in the 1st Century AD. They revere angels as the highest of God's created beings. They boast that they alone have "The Prophet" Moses who brought them the Law. And, they were given the elaborate Temple with its altars, tables, lamps, instruments, veil, Ark of the Covenant, and all the priestly rituals of sacrifices for direct communion the one true God - something no other nation has. So Paul is going to show them from their own Hebrew Scriptures that Jesus is above ALL of these. Dr. Newton carefully explains that to start off regarding angels, Paul cites the Psalms 3 times alongside the prophet Samuel to make the case that Jesus is far superior to God's ministering messengers - including a direct quote from the Greek Septuagint [LXX] Scripture.
Dr. Newton teaches thru Paul's incredible logic-reasoning that Jesus is first an foremost the One who precedes the "foundation of the Earth" - while also being far beyond any angel, because God Almighty says "sit at my right hand until I make all your enemies your footstool" [that was never said to any angel]. In addition, Paul quotes Psalm 110 - the exact same passage Jesus posed to the 1st Century Pharisees-Sadducees-religious leaders re: Messiah being both the 'son of David' AND yet David calls Him "my Lord/master". This segues into how important it is for believers to fully grasp just how GREAT is our salvation and it should not be regarding lightly - as Paul warns: "Don't slip away". Dr. Dave explores several examples from the Old Testament where the "Word delivered by angels" was disobeyed resulting in "just punishment" - so then, how much more should we pay close attention to the Word now delivered directly to us by Jesus.
